James R. A. Samaroden

James has practiced family law in Edmonton since 2009. His practice focuses on minimizing the use of the judicial system and instead relying on negotiations and settlement meetings. He is a member of the Association of Collaborative Lawyers of Alberta, but does not restrict his practice to collaborative files. His goal is to help families through transition as successfully as possible – sometimes that means you just need to go to court, and sometimes you are forced to respond to court applications.

In family law disputes, James’s approach is to ensure clients consider every factor when considering their options. There are emotional stresses, relationships with friends and family, financial impacts, and long term effects that he believes clients should consider before agreeing to a settlement or resorting to court.

James has experience in all three court levels. He has run trials in both the Provincial Court and Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta. James can represent you if you have a family law matter, such as divorce, common-law separation, child support, spousal support, parenting time, guardianship, custody, and uncontested adoptions applications. He is also available for consultations and limited representation, drafting relationship or separation agreements, and can give independent legal advice on agreements and Minutes of Settlement.

James was born and raised in Fort McMurray, Alberta. He completed a Bachelor of Management, with Great Distinction, from the University of Lethbridge in 2005, and his Juris Doctor from University of Victoria in 2009. While enrolled in Law School he was part of the Co-operative Education Program and completed work terms with Syncrude in Fort McMurray, AB (corporate counsel); the British Columbia Ministry and Agriculture and Lands in Victoria, B.C.; Harris & Company in Vancouver, B.C. (Employment & Labour Law); and Brown Henderson Melbye in Victoria, B.C. (Family Law).

He is an active member of the Orthodox Church of America and attends the St. Herman of Alaska Orthodox Sobor. He was Co-Chair of the Canadian Bar Association Young Lawyers for two years ending in 2011.
