Laura H. Bruyer

Laura specializes in identifying the legal issues in complex family matters, advising her clients as to the best course of action, and effectively presenting evidence for judicial determination.

Laura has experience in all three court levels (Provincial, Court of Queen’s Bench and the Court of Appeal). Typically, her matters involve high conflict in which litigation is the last resort. Her cases have involved complex matters relating to custody, access, child support, spousal support, and property division. She has extensive experience at both the trial and appellate level. Laura has over 20 years of experience in litigation matters. Since 2005 she has had over 10 appearances before the Court of Appeal, and runs at least 6 family law trials/hearings a year in which oral evidence is called. She has attended numerous binding Judicial Dispute Resolutions as an effective alternative to trial when appropriate.

Laura obtained her LLB from the University of Alberta in 1991. She articled to a large downtown firm in Edmonton before moving to a small firm where she practiced from 1992 to 2005, becoming a partner in 1997. For the first few years, Laura had a general litigation practice. She focused on family law almost exclusively since 1999. In 2005, Laura joined the partnership of Gordon Zwaenepoel.

Laura has been a regular contributor to the advancement of legal education. She has presented papers for Legal Education Society of Alberta, with a particular emphasis on spousal support (when the payment of the same is appropriate or inappropriate). Further, she has been a sessional lecturer at the University of Alberta. Most recently she became a member of the Steering Committee revising and rewriting the Alberta Family Law Practice Manual.
